Bijou Trésor has been outfitting American Idol contestants for a while now. We provided runner-up Lauren Alaina with some of the jewelry she wore on last season’s finale. Now, we have found lovely pieces for another Idol finalist, Jessica Sanchez.

On Thursday, Jessica Sanchez and Phillip Phillips made the final two over Joshua Ledet and will face off for the title next week. She is already expected to be the favorite, regardless of how her final performances sound, but if there is one thing we’ve learned from American Idol, it is to never assume anything.

Gold Jewelry

In reality, a gold allergy is usually not to the element gold, represented as Ag in the periodic table, but it is a reaction to the alloy used to create the fashion jewelry piece. Pure gold is too malleable to use in jewelry, so a metal alloy must be added for strength. These can include manganese, nickel, or copper, and give the gold its color. Add a lot of copper and you get rose gold; add a little copper and you get pink gold.

To determine the purity of the gold, the karat (K) system was devised. 24K is 100% pure gold, which is too weak for gold jewelry. 18K equates to 75% gold and is the top percentage that works for gold jewelry.

People who have a gold allergy most likely are allergic to one of the alloys, most commonly nickel. Nickel allergies affect many people and unless they can prove what alloy is in the necklaces they buy, it is best to avoid gold jewelry.

Symptoms of Gold Allergy

• Rashes or Redness: The area touching the gold, such as necks for necklaces or fingers from rings, can become discolored, ranging from pink to dark red. The area may also appear green, like tarnish. Either way, remove the necklace and wash with soap and water.
• Itching: If you experience an itchiness in the location of a commonly warn item, take it off and clean it. Then clean the affected area before putting it back on. If the itching continues, take off the fashion jewelry for a few days to determine if it is the cause.
• Eczema: Eczema is cracking, blistering, or roughing of the skin. This may require a doctor’s prescription.
• Hives: In very rare cases, people get hives, or raised bumps on their skin, from a gold allergy. Please seek medical attention if this occurs.

It is also worth noting that sometimes the cause of discolored or itchy skin can be sweat and dirt trapped by the jewelry. Before freaking out and selling your gold jewelry, thoroughly wash it and the affected area.

Designers “Stop Staring” Draw Inspiration from Mexican Cinema

Retro-chic label Stop Staring and head designer Alicia Estrada used “Epoca de Oro” The Golden Age of Mexican cinema, for her fashion lines. Gorgeous Mexican starlets like Dolores del Rio and Lupe Velez provided the inspiration for tight, body-hugging dresses with retro prints that harken back to the 1960s, including plaids, checks, and polka dots.

The eye-popping finale was a floor-length dress that was covered in gold sequins. As the model walked down the runway, her swaying hips made the dress shimmer with waves of golden radiance, bringing the audience to a standing ovation.

Nuvula Collection “In the Airs of the Belle Epoque”

The Nuvula collection was bizarre in an “only the fashion world could pull that off” sort of way. The assortment of pieces made use of diamond shapes and was described as a “tribute in colors and textures to Gustav Klimt and Toulouse Lautrec.” The circus-look featured about 60 looks, though many were repeats in different colors. Vests, flapper fringe, and plaid made up the un-cohesive designs inspired by the 20s, 30s, 60s, Elizabethan Era, circus, ballet, and rock and roll.

Overall Impressions

For the fashionistas, I’m sure it was incredible, but for the laymen like me, the appeal was lost. There were many sexy and practical styles to grace the runway, including leather jackets in post-apocalyptic fashions, but some of it was too intangible to imagine anyone wearing on the street.

I would recommend keeping an eye on S&G; they seem like an up-and-coming brand of tattered designs. The pieces contained rips and shreds, along with patches and shards of clothing sewn back on. While this sounds disjointed and possibly ugly, S&G pulled it off magnificently.

Cubic zirconia is a synthetic stone that closely resembles diamonds. Cubic zirconia (CZ) is the cubic crystalline form of zirconium dioxide. CZ’s are Diamond look-a-likes that are man-made and grown in laboratories. The gemstone is hard and usually colorless, although it can be made in a number of different colors. Because of the close similarity between CZ and real diamonds, CZ has become an extremely popular and more affordable substitute to real diamond jewelry.

CZs come in grades ranging from A to AAAAA. Many people think that grade A is the highest and best grade, but they are wrong. The best grade for CZ is AAAAA, which is the new high intensity CZ. Generally it looks better and lasts longer as well.

It is hard to differentiate between CZ and real diamonds with naked eye. Below are listed some of the differences that are somewhat visible and detectable between CZ and real diamonds:

• CZ is virtually flawless, whereas most diamonds have some sort of defects
• CZ is cut and polished differently therefore it outshines and outsparkles real diamonds due to higher rate of dispersion
• CZ tends to be heavier than diamond
• CZ is usually colorless, which is rare found in diamonds
• All other tests require a jeweler’s loupe or microscope.

So why is this dress so difficult to accessorize? Well, one side of the neckline of the dress runs higher than the other, giving an asymmetrical shape. This can be a dilemma when you’ve been looking for the perfect night to wear your dress and your favorite necklace.

Here are a few accessorizing ideas that we have come up with that would make any one shoulder dress your best friend.

The Choker: A choker style necklace lays close to the neck without interfering with a slanting neckline. This style accentuates the neck and brings attention to the face.

The Lariat: A lariat’s long length allows you to loop it over several times and knot it to the desired effect. This style necklace can create a dramatic effect with one-shoulder dresses, making you the envy of the night!

Long Necklace: A long necklace usually works with a one-shoulder dress because it hangs low enough to show up without getting lost in the dress material. You can double loop a long necklace to make the jewelry more prominent and shorten the length.
